God Never Backs Down

Genesis 11:4

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

God’s plan was for the people to “be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth” (Genesis 9:1). But the people had a better idea. Their egotistical plan included a tower that reached to the heavens. They thought the demonstration of their tower-power would cause God to back down and allow them to stay in one spot.

Just for the record . . . God never backs down. He dealt with the issue by supernaturally confusing their language. Picture the scene. One minute the parents were bragging about their super-gifted children, and the next minute it all sounded like babbling. Then God gave the rebellious innovators exactly what they didn’t want. He “scattered them over the face of the whole earth.”

By the way . . . are you building any titanic towers in your life? Are you using bricks of rebellion to show God just how “powerful” you really are? Are you trying to show him that your plan is better? Are you trying to tell him that regardless of what he wants, you’ll do what you darn well please? Just for the record . . . God never backs down. If you’re a tower builder, get ready for some confusing times.

Father, pride is so deceptive and debilitating. It lives right on the border of a healthy sense of self-worth and sinful self-absorption. Give us discernment. Help us build our lives according to your instructions. Help us build lives that honor you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
