With You and In You

[expand title=”Devotion Text”]John 14:15-17

If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Jesus spent three years with His disciples. He was there to lead and teach them. Sometimes He interjected Himself into quarrels and, no doubt had more than one private session with those who needed perspective. They spent hours together walking from one town to another. They were firsthand witnesses to His miracles and healings. Jesus told His followers that He would be leaving them. However, he would not leave them by themselves.

In today’s passage, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit — the Spirit of truth — who would give the disciples needed guidance, encouragement, and counsel. The Spirit would be their advocate to help them. The Spirit of truth would be with them forever.

When God the Son took on flesh, He accepted the limitations that came with a human body. He could be in only one place at a time, but God the Spirit has no such limitations. Jesus said, “He lives with you and will be in you.” As believers, we can live with confidence that God, through His Holy Spirit, will always be present with us.

Father, thank You for Your constant presence through the Holy Spirit. Thank You for the confidence of knowing that wherever I go, You are with me and in me because I am Your child. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
