How does a person become wise? Where does one get wisdom? Some say wisdom comes from educational training. Put people in the right systems of learning and they will become wise. Others say wisdom comes from experience. Textbook learning goes only so far. It’s the boots-on-the-ground school of hard knocks that produce true knowledge. But God’s answer takes us in a different direction. Here’s what he says.

Job 28:28

And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’

God says that the essence of wisdom is “the fear of the Lord”. To fear the Lord means “to submit to”, “to venerate”, and “to be in awe of”. Wisdom is not acquisition, analysis, assimilation, and application of knowledge. The wise man fears the Lord even when he cannot understand God’s ways. Wisdom says, “You are God, and I am not.”

Maybe you are in a Job-like situation. Right now, the things you are going through don’t make sense. Remember, wisdom does not mean that I know all the answers; it means I know the One who does…and I submit myself to him. I didn’t say it was easy. But Scripture says that’s where godly wisdom begins.

Talking Points

  • Ask God to give you his wisdom and discernment in a changing and challenging world.
  • Ask God to help your adoration of him grow deeper and your love for his Word become stronger.

Father, give us the courage and humility to submit ourselves to you. Remind us often that wisdom is not standing with all the facts; rather, it is standing in awe of you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
