The Power of Unity

Psalm 133
A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

Unity. It’s a powerful word. And it’s an even more powerful experience. When families live in harmony life is good. Encouragement is rich when friends get along. When a team is moving in the same direction at the same time for the same reasons great things are going to happen.

Today’s psalm paints a vivid picture of unity. First, David describes anointing oil running down the priest’s head, shoulders, and onto his breastplate where the names of the twelve tribes were written. The oil covering the names was a distinctive picture of unity. Second, David likened unity to the heavy dew on Mt. Hermon symbolizing an energizing flow of fresh water making its way to Mt. Zion, another name for Jerusalem.

God placed us on this earth to do together what we could never do alone. We need each other to accomplish the things God has for us. Let’s move forward…together.

Father, help me live in unity as far as it depends on me. Help me to forgive others, encourage others, and move on from past hurts. Help me move forward in the strength of unity. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
