Hosea 3:1

The LORD said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”

Hosea’s wife, Gomer, committed adultery. Some of you know the emotional and physical agony that brings upon a marriage partner. Hosea felt the pain. He could have washed his hands and walked away from the relationship. He could have put the past behind and started fresh. But God gave him a different path to follow.

God instructed the prophet to go back to the woman who had defiled their marriage covenant and was, at the time, “loved by another man.” Hosea worked through his pain as he made his way back to Gomer. Even though she left, Hosea pursued. He demonstrated his love to the one who had shunned it. He loved her just as God loved the Israelites even though they turned to other gods and offered raisin cakes to Baal in thanksgiving for the harvest.

God showed Israel, through Hosea’s actions, that His love was unconditional. Israel left God, but God never left them. What a lesson for us! Unconditional love does not give us a license to sin. It shows us the heart of God. It gives us a desire to demonstrate our love for Him.

Father, help us respond to Your great love. Thank You for loving us unconditionally through Jesus. Help us demonstrate our love for You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
