The End of the Matter

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Solomon, the writer of these words, had everything…and nothing at the same time. The book of Ecclesiastes is a reflective journal of his personal search for meaning.

Solomon was the wealthiest man who ever lived. Yet all his money could not fill the hole in his heart. Solomon was born into royal leadership. Yet his personal power left an empty taste in his mouth. Solomon pursued unbridled sexual pleasure. Yet the warm bodies of the most beautiful women left his soul cold. Solomon concluded: “Meaningless! Meaningless!… Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:2 NIV). “Meaningless.” Solomon used that word thirty-five times in his journal. Solomon’s life seemed to be overflowing but his soul was bone dry.

Summing up the outcome of his pursuits and desires Solomon came to a simple conclusion: Fear God, keep his commandments, and don’t forget that one day you will give an account before God. It’s a shame Solomon did not start with that conclusion. But…we can.

Talking to God

Father, help us to learn from Solomon. May we worship you with all we have. May we follow you every day. May we always live with an eternal perspective. Remind us often that one day we will give an account before you. Help us, Lord, to show our children what a life of worship and following you with an eternal perspective really looks like. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
