King Saul and all his men were terrified. Day after day, a nine-foot-tall giant named Goliath challenged the Israelite soldiers to a one-on-one battle; the winner takes all. After forty days, no one had stepped forward. The soldiers were frozen with fear.

On day forty-one, a young boy named David arrived delivering supplies to his three brothers who were serving in the army. When he heard Goliath’s challenges, he was incensed that a “Philistine . . . should defy the armies of the living God.” David stepped forward.

1 Samuel 17:45, 47

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied . . .and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the LORD‘s, and he will give you into our hand.”

David faced Goliath with only a sling and five stones. He planted his first shot right in the middle of the giant’s forehead. And that was the end of Goliath!

There are a few giants roaming the earth today that we face, like fear, confusion, disappointment, discouragement, and the list goes on. Living without fear means that when we face the giants, the battle belongs to the Lord! With God on our side, the outcome is always certain. We win!

Talking Points

  • Name the giants in your life. Don’t hold back. Tell God what he already knows.
  • The battle belongs to the Lord. Give it to him and watch him work through you to plant a big rock in your giant’s forehead.

Father, help that truth sink deep into my heart. So often I am frozen with fear as I face my personal giants. Remind me that the battle belongs to you. Help me move forward trusting in your name.In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Keep bringing your giants to the Lord throughout the day.

I used this story at the SHBC wresting camp. But an important part is also that David remembered how God had helped his with past battles (lion & bear). By remembering Gods past help it gives us confidence he will b there in the future.
