Taken Up

Devotion Text

Acts 1:9-11

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

After Jesus told His followers to be His witnesses throughout the world, He was “taken up before their very eyes.” Finally, a cloud hid Him from their sight. Jesus ascended into heaven. Those watching couldn’t believe their eyes and continued to stare at the sky. Two angels interrupted their gaze and told them that in the same way Jesus went into heaven, He would return. Now it was time to tell the world about Him.

Jesus’ ascension is critical to our walk on this earth. Right now Jesus is at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. Jesus knows what it’s like to walk on this earth. He knows the temptations and struggles of the flesh. He was tempted in every way that we are, with one exception: Jesus never sinned. He is our access to the Father. That’s why we pray, “In Jesus’ name.”

Whatever you are going through today, Jesus understands. Rejection. Disappointment. Death. Pain. Jesus has experienced your emotions and He wants to give you needed strength. The writer of Hebrews says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are —yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:15-16).

Lord Jesus, thank You for interceding on my behalf every day. You know what it’s like to walk on this earth, and You know my weaknesses. Thank You for allowing me to approach You with confidence. Thank You for supplying mercy and grace in my time of need. In Your name I pray. Amen.
