Soul Rest

Psalm 62:1-6
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down—this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

I was on a trip to Washington D.C. with my family. What a great time to get away and enjoy being with them at our nation’s capital. But…my phone was on “vibrate.” And the temptation was there to check out each pulsating reminder that someone needed, or thought they needed my attention. In today’s multimedia world, we are always plugged in, but too often we are plugged in to the wrong source.

I can find the rest for my worn out soul in only one place—God alone. The first part of today’s passage literally reads, “Only to God is my soul silent.” Only to God did David look with complete calmness. He knew that God was his “rock” (source of safety) and “salvation” (deliverance). David said God “is my fortress” and, like a soldier sitting inside the impenetrable walls of a great stronghold, David rested in the Lord.

How about you? Are you wearied from being plugged in…to the wrong sources? Are the distracting calls of life turning your attention from the only One who can bring calmness to your frenetic heart? I challenge you to an experiment. For one day unplug from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, email, texting, phone calls, radio, computer, and television. Start that day by reading God’s Word, spending time in prayer, and continuing to communicate with Him throughout the day. Take a walk on a trail or spend some time at a park enjoying God’s great creation. God can deliver rest to your soul. Maybe you’ve been too busy to let Him.

Father, I can get wound tight over small things. Help me to unplug and seek You. And help me find rest in the midst of my responsibilities. Remind me often that real rest is found only in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
