John 21:15

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

Still regretting his three denials, Peter went back to what he knew best. He was out fishing and that’s where Jesus found him. The resurrected Lord called to the fisherman from the shore and provided for a miraculous catch of fish. When Peter realized that it was Jesus on the shore, he jumped in the water and ran to Him.

In an intimate conversation, Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Perhaps each question provided Peter an opportunity to counter each previous denial. With Peter reaffirming his love, Jesus reinstated the apostle and gave him a second invitation to follow.

Jesus always provides another chance. God has not written you off. He has not cast you aside. Your failure is not final. While you must acknowledge and repent of your sin, Jesus waits with open arms to welcome you back, reinstate you, and use you. Your past cannot define you. You are defined by whose you are. In Jesus you are significant, secure, accepted, forgiven, and empowered. Jesus forgives and unlocks the prison of past regret. It’s time to move forward and serve Him in freedom.

Lord Jesus, some reading this today are struggling with past sins, thinking this has disqualified them for future impact. Please speak to their hearts and remind them of Peter, who was forgiven, reinstated, and restored. May today be the day when Your forgiveness is accepted and freedom is experienced. In Your name. Amen.
