Satisfied: Finally and Forever

Luke 9:12-17

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” (About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

The feeding of the five thousand is a miracle that teaches us about much more than filling empty stomachs. Jesus came to fill our hungry souls. Deep within our hearts is an “inward famine.” A yearning for something that will finally satisfy. A search for that thing that will quench the longing. A pursuit to find something to fill the inner void.

The great crowd that had gathered that afternoon was hungry…for the Bread of Life. The miracle meal filled them for a day. Then they were hungry again.

Wedged firmly in our hearts is a persistent need—until we meet Jesus. He is the Bread of Life. He fills the heart finally and forever. When we meet Jesus we realize that He is what we always wanted; He is what we always needed.

Lord Jesus, thank You for satisfying my spiritual hunger. Thank You for satisfying my soul. May I always seek You for what I need. In Your name. Amen.
