Can you imagine God appearing before you and saying, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you”? Can you even imagine?! What would you ask for? Here’s how Solomon responded when God put that offer before the young king.

2 Chronicles 1:7-10

In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and steadfast love to David my father, and have made me king in his place. O Lord God, let your word to David my father be now fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can govern this people of yours, which is so great?”

Solomon recognized that the people in his charge belonged to God. He acknowledged that God had made him their leader. He humbly confessed his need for wisdom and knowledge in order to lead them well. What things do you request from God to effectively lead the people he has placed in your life?

Talking Points

  • Humbly confess your need for wisdom and discernment in a confusing and changing world.
  • Ask God to give you the foresight to lead your family well. Ask him to give your children wisdom to lead and live for him in their generation.

Father, I often only ask for what I want. Please give me discernment to know what I need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
