On Guard

Matthew 16:5-6

When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

When Jesus warned the disciples about the “yeast” of the religious leaders, they thought He was talking about bread. But He quickly explained to them He was using the idea of yeast to describe the penetrating and corrupted teaching that these leaders were spreading throughout Israel.

Today, false teaching pervades the Internet, radio and television. Sometimes Scripture is nowhere near the teaching. Sometimes it is loosely connected. And sometimes the teaching is right from a passage but misapplied. Believers today must be grounded in the truth so they can spot error.

For this reason it is so important for every growing believer to know and understand the essential truths of the Christian faith. We need to know what we believe and why we believe it. Understanding Scripture gives us the confidence to accept it and the courage to apply it. Like the man who built his house on the rock, we must dig deep to set our faith on the solid rock of God’s Word.

Father, thank You for Your Word. Help me read it, study it and apply it to my life. Help me build my faith on the solid rock. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
