Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.

Fear is real and unrelenting. When one fear is quelled, another rises up to take its place. For some, fear is a visitor; for others, it is a permanent house guest. The question is not, “Will fear come?” The question is, “What will I do when it arrives?”

In today’s passage, Moses was handing over the reins of leadership to Joshua. Moses knew his successor could handle the assignment…if he dealt with his fear. “Be strong and courageous!” Moses told Joshua with all Israel watching. “It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deut. 31:8). Here is today’s question: Are you willing to give your fears to God and trust that he will never leave or forsake you?

Talking Points

  • Tell God your fears—all the things that cause you to pause or be paralyzed. Thank God that he will never leave you. With him, you never have to face fear alone.
  • Our children (and grandchildren) are students of our actions. They see how we respond to fear. Ask God to help you teach them—in the most challenging times—that you can handle fear because God is always with you.

Father, thank you for being a Father who never forsakes me. Remind me of the great truth that you are always with me, that I am never alone. Drive out my fear and replace it with faith. And remind me of your presence throughout the day as I continue to talk to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
