My Whole Heart

2 Kings 10:28

So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit–the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.

Jehu was a man on a mission. After Elisha had him anointed as king of Israel, he wasted no time. Driving his chariot from place to place “like a madman,” he took care of the existing leaders in short order. Then he went for Jezebel. Right after she painted her face and arranged her hair, Jehu had her thrown from the city wall. Then he killed all of Baal’s prophets and destroyed Baal’s temple. Let’s just say that Jehu did not stand around letting the grass grow under his feet.

But there were some things Jehu didn’t get around to doing. He flattened Baal’s temple but let the golden calves stand. Scripture says, “Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart.” His twenty-eight-year reign ended with mixed reviews.

Some people, like Jehu, are passionate and adamant about certain things. They live their lives on a mission to make sure good things get done for God. But like Jehu, there are some glaring spiritual deficiencies. God wants our whole heart. Anything less is a life of mixed reviews.

Father, what would it really look like if I held nothing back? What would it look like if I was careful to follow You with all my heart? By Your grace, help me live a full-out life for Jesus. Don’t let me go to the grave with mixed reviews. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
