Longing for God’s Word

Psalm 119:129-136
פ Pe

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name. Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from human oppression, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees. Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.

The psalmist reveals a solemn truth in today’s passage—straying from God’s Word is nothing but bad news. If God’s instruction doesn’t rule your life, sin will. The psalmist knows that when God’s law is ignored sorrow is inevitable. He’s been there and done that and doesn’t want to be there and do that again.

Listen to the heart of the psalmist. He pants and longs for God’s commandments. He wants to steer clear of sin. He desires redemption and obedience. He seeks God’s smile of approval. He is full of shame when he misses the mark.

Isn’t that the heart you want? Let’s pray for that desire.

Father, help me approach Your Word as the psalmist does in this passage. Remind me of my great need to hear from You daily. Remind me that my dark heart needs a constant light. Remind me that my simple mind needs clear understanding. Remind me of my need for Your mercy. Remind me that disobedience is a sad and sorrowful place. Please, Lord, make Your face shine upon me and teach me Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
