Little Children

Matthew 18:6

If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Nurturing and protecting their children is the most important job that moms and dads have. It is criminal for a parent to neglect the needs and growth of a child. Parents have been given a great gift and responsibility. They must care for their children’s physical needs, and they must model and mentor what it means to follow hard after Christ. The truths of Scripture must be impressed upon the hearts of our children.

The nurturing and protection of a new believer is a church’s most important job. It is sinful for a church to neglect the needs and growth of a spiritual baby. New believers are great gifts and great responsibilities. We must help them become grounded in the essential truths of the Christian faith. We must teach them and show them what it looks like to follow Jesus.

Jesus gave a specific and solemn warning to those who do not take care of spiritual infants. We must live in a way that will never cause baby Christians to stumble. We must invest in the lives of new believers. So the question is this: How are you helping new Christians grow?

Father, help us invest in the lives of new believers. Raise up mature Christians committed to help new Christians become grounded in the essential truths of the Christian faith. May we nurture and protect those who trust in Jesus as the only way to have a relationship with You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
