In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
Can you imagine seeing the things that Isaiah described in this passage? The great prophet saw God seated on his throne as King over all. The Lord was high and exalted. His long robe filled the temple as a sign of royalty and majesty.
Above the Lord were angelic beings, each with six wings. In humility, the seraphim used two wings to cover their faces as they hovered before God. With two wings they covered their feet showing their service to the Most High. And with two wings they flew in continued activity. As they served, they called out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Isaiah’s response to such a vision was to cry out, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips…!”
We thank God that he is our heavenly Father and we can approach him with the endearing “Abba, Father.” While our relationship is an intimate one, he is still the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal Creator. Thank God for your personal relationship with him. And don’t forget that he is holy and the “whole earth is full of his glory!”
Talking to God
Father, forgive me for taking your greatness for granted. Help me live in awe of your Person. As I draw near to you as my Father, may I never forget that you are holy, holy, holy. Help me teach my children (and grandchildren) about your greatness and majesty. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
