Forgetting to Pray

Joshua 9:14

So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD.

When Israel entered the promised land, the word spread. The occupants of the land knew two things: Israel was going to try to conquer them and the God of Israel was a powerful God. So, the leaders of Gibeon came up with a plan. Although they lived nearby, they dressed in old clothes, patched sandals, and arrived at the Israelite camp with worn-out sacks and old wineskins. Convinced the Gibeonites were from a distant land, Israel agreed to a treaty. Just one problem—God’s people “did not ask counsel from the LORD” they forgot to pray.

That story always convicts me. How many times do I make decisions based on my perception without seeking God’s perspective? How many times do I decide to do or not to do something by simply checking out the “provisions” (spreadsheets, test-drives, investment returns, outward appearance, etc.)? Godly decisions require talking to God. Forgetting to pray is a formula for failure.

Talking Points

  • Prayer is simply talking to God…all the time…about everything. Ask God to forgive you for leaving him out of your decisions.
  • Slow down. Start interacting with God about all of your decisions. Seek God’s guidance for wisdom, perspective, timing, and next steps.

Father, forgive me for not depending on you. Forgive me for making decisions without spending needed time in prayer. Help me continually depend on you for guidance and next steps. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
