The Journey with Ron Moore

Don’t Wander

Devotion Text

Numbers 26:65

For the LORD had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Moses sent twelve undercover agents to scope out the Promised Land. The men came back with differing views. Two men said, “Let’s go take possession of the land! We can do it!” Ten said, “Not so fast. The people are powerful. The cities are fortified. No way can we defeat these people.” The majority report was accepted, and Israel refused to trust in God’s ability to conquer the enemy.

Israel’s actions resulted in a tough penalty. God said that every person twenty years of age would die in the desert. Not one of them would enter the Promised Land except Caleb and Joshua. Forty years later, God gave Joshua the privilege of leading the people into the land of promise. Regarding Caleb, God said, “because my servant Caleb . . . follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land . . . and his descendants will inherit it.”

The obstacles you face today may seem as impossible as the cities and people in the Promised Land seemed to the ten fearful spies. You may feel small and weak compared to your problems. And you know what? You are! But God isn’t. The God you call your Father is with you. And he is bigger and more powerful than any obstacle in your life. He can be trusted. Here’s the question: Will you trust him?

Father, there are obstacles in my life that seem insurmountable. It’s tempting to shrink back in fear. But give me the faith of Joshua and Caleb. Help me follow you wholeheartedly. Don’t leave me to wander in the desert and miss your promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
