Crooked Timber

Luke 13:10-13

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

Her eyes focused on the ground. The stone pavement. The muddy roads. The dirt floors. Her tilted head scanned to the right and left sporadically. The maneuvering it took to gaze forward was painful and infrequent. For eighteen years a demonic spirit had crippled her, bent her, almost broken her. She didn’t see Jesus coming…but He saw her.

Jesus saw the woman while He was teaching at a synagogue. The woman’s twisted body was both hard to find stooped in the crowd and hard to miss with its distinguishing deformity. When Jesus saw her He called her forward and proclaimed that she was set free. He reached out to her and His omnipotent touch broke the chains of her demonic prison.

Today you may feel chained. Bent. Broken. Jesus is calling out to you. He is asking you to come to Him. He wants to set you free. He desires to straighten your soul, your life, your future path. One old writer says that we are all made from “crooked timber.” Jesus came to straighten us so we could follow hard after Him with a life of praise.

Lord Jesus, there are many reading this who are bent, broken, and feeling imprisoned. I pray that Your voice would be heard over the crowd. I pray they will come to You. Thank You, in advance, for Your touch that straightens “crooked timber.” In Your name. Amen.

Feeling beaten, bent, broken? Let us pray for you. You can share your needs by emailing prayer@ronmoore.org. Thank you for the privilege of letting us pray with you and for you.
