Coming to the Party?

Matthew 22:1-3

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.”

Excitement! A son was getting married! No expense was spared. The father pulled out all the stops. The best caterers were secured. Orders were placed at the finest bakery. The tables were set, the food was prepared, and the banquet was ready to begin. The word went out — “Let’s get the party started!” But all the invited guests refused to come.

Jesus used this parable to teach about the kingdom of heaven. The heavenly Father prepared for a great celebration. He sent His Son to earth to purchase the invitation for all to come, but many refused the invitation. They rejected the Father and the Son, so the Father rejected them.

God has set the table for a great eternal celebration. He demonstrated His love by sending Jesus to make a way for us to enter into the kingdom of heaven. The offer is free, given with His grace. Have you accepted the invitation? Throughout your life, the Father continues to extend the invitation. But one day…when this life is over…it will be too late. Will you accept the invitation today?

Father, I pray for those who have not yet accepted Your free invitation to the great eternal celebration. Work in their hearts and help them to say “yes” to You today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
