Matthew 18:1-5

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Greatness.

Rulers who guided countries.

Generals who won battles.

Trailblazers who started movements.

Greatness.

The job we have.

The money we make.

The house we live in.

The car we drive.

Greatness.

Facebook “friends.”

Twitter and Instagram followers.

Posting “likes” and comments.

Greatness.

“Magnitude.”

“Enormity.”

“Vastness.”

“Largeness.”

Greatness. Jesus turned it upside down. Jesus said to think low, think little. Jesus said that the kingdom is made up of those who “become like little children.” Becoming great is becoming small. Becoming great is taking on the humility of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, thank You for becoming great by humbling Yourself to death—even death on a cross. Help me become like a little child and wait on You to lift me up. In Your name. Amen.
