Isaiah 39:8

“The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “There will be peace and security in my lifetime.”

Hezekiah was in the prime of his life when the illness hit. Isaiah told him to get things in order before he died. Lying on his bed close to death, Hezekiah pleaded with God to save him. God heard his prayer and promised the leader another fifteen years. Hezekiah was overjoyed! Unfortunately, pride overtook his heart. When envoys came from Babylon to give condolences, the recovered king showed them everything in his kingdom!

What was Hezekiah thinking? Why would a leader give away guarded secrets? God was not pleased with Hezekiah and let him know that the consequences of his actions would be placed on his sons. That’s when Hezekiah spoke the words in today’s passage. In essence, he is saying, “Well, at least I don’t have to worry about it.”

Sin always has consequences, and sometimes they fall on the generation after us. The result of our sin is a terrible legacy to leave to our sons and daughters. It has been well said that no man is an island. What we do today does matter – today and tomorrow. Let’s not follow the example of Hezekiah. Let’s leave God’s blessings to our children, not the mess of our sin.

Father, please remind me that what I do today counts for tomorrow. Help me to leave a legacy of spiritual blessing to those who follow me. In Jesus name. Amen.
